It’s a crazy story and I will happily share it in person, but here’s the ending…

This (very wet) hawk is now in a kitty carrier box in our garage and one dead chicken is in a bucket outside. What a crazy night it was last night!

***UPDATE:: I wrote the quick version to this story on our family blog and thought I’d share it here too…

It was a dark and rainy night. I went out to close up the chicken coop as I do every night, but on this night there were only two chickens inside. hmmmmmm. oh crap (plus a few heavier hitting profanities), there’s a giant bird on the fence (turned out to be this hawk pictured), one dead chicken on the ground below and the rest of the chickens huddled in a far corner of their run soaking wet, but too scared to move. Fast forward past getting all the live chickens that were outside into the coop, many phone calls to people unwilling or unable to help—hubby and I had to catch this hawk and put it in a box for the night until someone could pick it up the next morning. Yes, you read right, we had to catch this thing. Fortunately, it was soaking wet and exhausted so getting my hands around its wings and body was not that hard. Getting its razor sharp, chicken killer talons to let go of the wire it was on was different story, however! Eventually, after working through a giggling fit and cutting the fence (did I mention it was a dark and rainy night?) we were able to get this guy into a box. Hub and I agreed that we signed up to have predators kill our chickens—we knew it would eventually happen and it wouldn’t be easy, but having to catch the killer and house it for the night was quite unexpected! Unexpected, indeed.

it’s quite likely that I will be painting stripes on my jeans one of these days.

I love the Scandinavian aesthetic of the two ladies at Darling Clementine. Today they announced their new website—a wonderful collection of their illustration work. Also, fun to check regularly is their blog.
